Know How to Hit a Ball Over and Under Trees, Rough
To successfully navigate the inevitable trees and rough that you will encounter on the golf course, Golf Genie™ Pocket Guides recommends the following golf tips.

Hitting Over a Tree

  • Choose a longer club (i.e., a 6-iron for a 7-iron shot).
  • Play the ball farther ahead in stance.
  • Slightly open your stance.
  • Open your clubface slightly.
  • Take your normal swing.

Hitting Under a Tree

  • Use a lower lofted club (i.e., a 5-iron)
  • Place the ball back in stance.
  • Place more weight on the front foot and leave weight on front foot throughout swing.
  • Slightly close the clubface.
  • Take a ¾ length backswing.
  • Keep your left arm straight and hands in front of the clubface on downswing.

Hitting Out of Rough

  • Use a higher lofted club (i.e., a pitching wedge)
  • Place the ball back in stance.
  • Place more weight on the front foot and leave weight on front foot throughout swing.
  • Open stance and clubface.
  • Place hands in front of ball and aim slightly left.
  • Grip the club tighter than normal.
  • Take a fairly vertical backswing and a steep downswing.
